3/23/2008 - Why Engineers should hate conspiracy theorists
|
Everyone enjoys a good conspirarcy theory, but should they?
Granted, the never-to-be-put-to-bed JFK assassination theory has provided good entertainment value, but I had long thought that most of these were actually quite dangerous. You see, I think their sensationalist nature is like candy for our attention spans, distracting us from real issues.
For example, it is far more fun and comfortable to pursue the idea that some vast new world order is manipulating our economy to create a one world government than it is to accept the fact that every one of us who shops at the big box marts are the cause of lost jobs. Oooh, that darn Dick Cheney and his Haliburton is behind Fords Engine Plant number 2 being on the brink of closing!
Tonight, though, as I was unwinding from the drive home after Easter, digesting way too much ham, I sat watching some silly UFO show on the History channel. They were discussing whether or not advanced airplanes, such as the SR-71 and stealth fighter, were the product of captured alien technology. The longer I watched, the more angry I got.
Why did I get angry? Because these people sprouting these theories, most of whom know nothing about engineering, are outright insulting some of the best minds our country has known. The same thing is true of those who say we faked the moon landing. Understandably, Buzz Aldrin has pretty much come to blows with these idiots. Why would you think he would not be insulted? Do you know how much time and effort everyone involved in the Apollo program put in that you are now calling liars? Literally, tens of thousands of people!
Furthermore, it just shows how ignorant most of these people are that they do not understand the underlying nature of how to solve problems, such as going to the moon or avoiding radar. Why is it impossible to think that we couple invent radar, but then not think of ways to fool it?
Perhaps it is my current involvement with the space program that makes it so much more aggravating. Going to the moon is by no means easy, but every day I see truly difficult problems being tackled, being taken apart, piece by piece until they are solved. It just seem like those people who do not have the balls to take problems head on want to negate the work of those who do.
